Their skin color is normally an olive green to a brown color along its back that gets lighter as it goes to their belly with dark vertical bands running down their sides. The center of their belly is a whitish color and this species have both spiny and soft dorsal fins. They also have a white tip on the bottom lobe of the tail fin.

Tips for Catching Walleye

Here are some tips for catching walleye that can help you have a successful fishing trip each time you go fishing in Missouri.

The walleye is one species that will eat most anything they can fit into their mouth so you don't have to worry too much about the bait you use. Their favorite foods include worms, crustaceans, insects and small fish. The walleye do seem to prefer the deeper waters and the best time to fish for them is from late evening to early morning.

Their great eyesight is one of their most distinguishing features that give them several advantages over other species. It makes it possible for them see better in the deeper waters and when it is dark.

This is the main reason they feed the most aggressively during the night time hours because they do have this advantage over their prey.

The walleye in Missouri will begin to spawn in the spring where they will seek out shoals near the deep water with clean bottoms and shallow bars. Whenever it's possible they will try to migrate to the cooler waters of the feeder streams.

Start out fishing in the shallows and move outward to the moderate depths during this season. You can also search around structures, points, ledges and submerged humps where they can nest and begin spawning.
